Working as a specialist in it in a University, and I have about 6 or 7 teams in my store of technology on a weekly basis that needs to be repaired. Installation or replacement of units of hard disk or other hardware to virus and spyware cleaning I always seem to have a team to work in my shop.
There are many times that I must work on multiple computers at once. Sometimes it could be one of the topics mentioned above, or the fact that new shipments of computers that have that be setup for users. No matter what the case, space is a premium, and it would not be logical that an independent monitor, keyboard and mouse configuration for each team, I have to work on our technology shop.
Help me to fight for my weekly cache of the equipment I need to repair or installation, without occupying several offices or spaces of cube, a keyboard, video and mouse switch (KVM) has proved to be a useful tool while it couldn't work. Its functionality, along with its ease of use, daily made much faster and more efficient equipment repairs. A KVM switch allows you to connect a keyboard, monitor and mouse to a small switch box, which then has ports to connect multiple computers. KVM switches of age had only a vga and PS2 connectors, but new KVM switches are equipped with a vga and USB connections.
My current KVM switch supports up to 8 teams. The team which is located in the first slot is my ghost server, which I use to draw ghost images or create backup images. 2-8 Slots are free to be connected to any equipment that needs to be repaired, cleaned, or the Setup program. With this current setting, now can accommodate all teams in 4 layer shelving system, which helps to save space in each platform may contain 3 teams.
For me, the best setting I found was to sit the KVM switch in the top rack and run the cables down to all the lower shelves. This allows an easy access to cables suitable as well as quick hook ups. Constantly I am rotating equipment in and out of my store, so it is easy access to the equipment and cables.
The KVM allows me to make multiple repair or cleaning projects, as I can quickly switch between 8 different teams as necessary. As an example, I can run windows on a computer, then updates, switch to a second computer to look for software spyware and viruses, while running the analysis that I change to a third team to create a backup image and finally change to the first computer to connect the ghost server to the client that you want to create a backup image. Can I make all these tasks within minutes, all while using the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse, all on the same desktop.?
For the technical team are working on multiple computers throughout the week and even more important, must work on multiple computers at the same time, a KVM switch is an important and useful tool. Most small shops can get KVM switches that have only 2 or 4 connections on computer, where they can obtain larger stores switches KVM allow connections team of 8 or 16. Each technical computer will have different needs, but no matter what the burden of work appears, a KVM switch will help you optimize the queue, as well as make your life a little easier. And as the computer technicians, something that makes easier the things always is welcome!
