The purchase of a new computer - understanding Total cost of ownership

Bookmark and Share

As owner of a computer repair service center is very common to see customers who are contemplating simply buy a new computer as opposed to repair your existing equipment. Many of these clients tend to believe that a team of $300-400 who have seen in an advertisement for one of the big box stores can be the answer to your problem and eliminate its need for service. While it is true that there are some models of new computers sold in the range of $300-400 the initial purchase price is only one of the factors to consider when buying a computer. More important than the purchase price is what is known as the cost Total of ownership or TCO. Determine the total cost of ownership of a team means add the purchase price, as well as all incremental costs associated with having to determine the true cost of equipment to its owner during the life of the machine. Determine the total cost of ownership of a team involves adding the following:

The initial equipment purchase price
The cost of service, maintenance and repair work on the life of the equipment
The cost of the loss of productivity during any time the team was out of service
How many years can expect the team to the past for?

As you would expect, it is common for computers with very low initial purchase price between the highest Total cost of ownership. People of accounting in large enterprises has been understood for many years and this never will be a company of Fortune 500 using any of the models of equipment discount which will be on the shelf to the best Buy, Circuit City or any of the other big box stores. Almost all manufacturers (Dell, HP, etc.) offers two separate equipment lines. A line is known as their teams of "Business" class and the other is the line of "Home" to the teams. The main difference between both is that the equipment business line are designed for people who understand the TCO. The initial cost of a business team will always be higher than the "House" line although the speed of CPU, memory and hard disk size may be the same, but you getting a team that is built with best parts: not necessarily faster, but less likely to break down and most economical service if they break.

Lines House of teams are built based on a totally different measure - primarily that have a broken team will not cost anything. Unfortunately for consumers uninformed often is not the case; especially when is the team out of warranty, new computers, generally is only a year. For the DIY type of user of the computer that has a good backup system, not rely on the computer for important business functions and is able to carry out their own repairs, home teams model sold in big box stores tend to be an interesting option. For everyone else they may benefit from the purchase of a business class machine. You can find options for teams in business class on the Web sites of any of the major manufacturers and prices purchase or get in touch with the local computer repair service center. Many computer service centers will also have teams of leasing business model or refurbished to choose as well.
